Knitting Wool

Finding the right knitting wool is not as easy as some of us would like it to be. While wool is very pliable material, it also has some distinct disadvantages anybody considering knitting with it needs to keep in mind.

While these days comes from more than just sheep. Llama, alpaca, and goat wool is nothing unusual these days and feels just like any wool that comes from sheep. Most of the knitting wool that you will find will be made of one of the four animals above. Most of the wool that you will find will not tell you type of animal that has come from, and you probably will not be able to tell the difference anyway.

If you are just starting out knitting, wool is probably the best material for you to start with. It is very flexible and easy-to-use, does not get damaged easily while you are actually knitting. The downside is that will take some special care instructions after you are done knitting. For instance, if you do not want what you have knitted to shrink, then you need to always wash the wool in lukewarm or cold water. With that in mind, many people who knit with wool intentionally knit their creations too large to accommodate for this fact. Agitation is also a big problem with wool because it can make it clump up. For this reason, make people choose to hand wash any of their wool-made clothing.

When looking for the perfect wool, be sure that you look at the caring instructions on the label. This way you can be sure that anything you knit will remain intact once you are done. Some even have special instructions for while you are knitting, so this is especially important for you to pay attention to.

The best way to always ensure that your knitted creations stay just as nice as the day they were finished is to hand wash them. Even the nicest wool will be damaged in a washing machine or dryer, so hand washing is the preferable method. Many people do not take this into consideration when they purchase sweaters or other things made out of wool and wonder why they shrunk or were damaged once taken out of the dryer. Avoid this mistake by hand washing when possible.

You can find wool for knitting at any fabric store, though some larger department stores have it as well. Price compare and be sure that you are getting the colors you want so you do not regret picking the wrong ones once you’ve finished what you are knitting. Knitting wool is a delicate material, but once you have finally completed your first sweater or scarf you will absolutely love the feel.
